Learn a little more about mental health

1 in 4 people are like me, and have already had a mental health problem in their life.

Some statistics on mental health

  • Nearly one in ten people suffer from a mental illness and an estimated one in four people will experience a mental health problem in their lifetime.
  • Depression is a leading cause of functional, social and physical disability and will become the leading cause of the global burden of disease by 2030.

But what is good mental health?

Here is the definition according to the World Health Organization (WHO):

“It is a state of well-being in which individuals can realize their potential, cope with the normal stresses of life, work productively and successfully, and make a contribution to their community. »

So, basically we all need to feel loved, useful and we need to live in a harmonious environment, not too stressful.

How to prevent mental disorders?

To prevent, we can act on a multitude of factors.

On the one hand, by working to increase the effect of positive factors such as basic personal resources, working on self-esteem and having a good social network.

On the other hand, by reducing the effect of negative factors such as stress, unfavorable work environments, or social inequalities.

It is important to act on different levels: on oneself, one's immediate living environment (family, school, workplace) and one's global environment (public policies, social inequalities).
